Effective Altruism Miami—Infohazards: Ideas too Dangerous to Share!

When Leo Slizard thought up the nuclear bomb, should he have told anyone? Would the world have been better for him dragging that secret to his grave?

This is not just a question of a history that never was, dilemmas just like the ones Slizard faced have appeared in the very recent past and continue to appear with alarming regularity. Is there a technology or an innovation too dangerous to build, too dangerous to even imagine in public?

We’ll discuss the concept of infohazards and some almost-examples in the field of biosecurity. Then, we’ll debate whether or to what extent we should be mindful of it.
