I’m desensitized. I have to be, to stay sane in a job where I watch people die on a day to day basis. This is a bias; I’m just not convinced that it’s a bias in a negative direction.
While I’m definitely desensitized to suffering of others, seeing dead and dying people has made my own mortality all the more palpable. Constantly seeing sick people has also made scenarios of personal disability more available, which generally makes me avoid bad health choices out of fear. End of life care where I’m from is in an abysmal condition and I don’t ever want to experience it myself. I fear it far more than death itself.
