Tyrell, Caplan’s critique of democracy focuses on our own system. It is based on Wittman’s critique of traditional public choice. It used to be said that because we do not have direct democracy we will have self-interested rent-seeking politicians and lobbyists, insufficient competition and so on resulting in politicians not following the “will of the people”. Wittman showed those objections to be insubstantial and in turn Caplan showed that it proves the deficiency of our democracy since the “will of the people” is very wrong about many important things.
An objection I found to tiny-black-hole-swallows-the-universe is here. It’s from a flippant CS professor rather than a physicist but it makes some sense.
