Activities (all activities are optional)

A) Two conversation starter topics this week will be. (video and reading at the end)

1) Is science broken?
2) We create and curate our lives by having friends and peers.

B) We will also have the card game Predictably Irrational. Feel free to bring your own favorite games or distractions. This is a pet-friendly park and meeting.

C) There will be opportunities to go for a walk and talk about an hour after the meeting starts and use some gas barbeques if anyone wants to grill something. There are two easy-access mini-malls nearby with takeout hot food available. Search for Gelson’s or Pavilions in the zipcode 92660. I will provide some snacks and water.

D) Share a surprise! Tell the group about something that happened that was unexpected or changed how you look at the universe.

E) Make a prediction and give a probability and end condition.

F) Contribute ideas to the future direction of the group. Topics, types of meetings, activities, etc.

Conversation Starter Readings:
Suggested readings for this week are these summaries. These readings are optional, but if you do them, think about what you find interesting, surprising, useful, questionable, vexing, or exciting.

1) Sabine Hoffstader talks about 10 of the more infamous papers and experiments that called into question how good our process of science really is. Which experiments/papers stood out to you? What fundamental problems did they show? How might we fix the problem? Are there other cases in your area where you feel the process of knowing what is true has broken down, and no one is talking about it?

This is also related to the previous reading, the control group is out of control.

2) A reflection on how much who we are is shaped by who we choose to surround ourselves with. Is participating in these meetups part of a choice to become a different person? What factors do you think contributed the most to the genius of the people he described? What changes to you social milieu do you think would improve you?
