Without a better definition about what you mean by inadequacy, I don’t think this advice is helpful.
Do not console yourself with the ice cream thoughts like ’Overthinking is causing me this.” or “These are just irrational thoughts”.
This sounds to me like rejecting the CBT tool of identifying distorted thoughts. While I don’t think any established therapy technique is sancrosanct I do think that giving the advice to ignore them, should come with more reasoning to back it up.
Write all your inadequacies and bothering on a piece of paper. Write the actions to overcome these adequacies. Write a rough plan to perform these actions. This is a very humbling feeling of accepting all your lackings. This will build your character and will help you make better decisions, will give you a sense of ownership of your life, and will help you achieve more.
If a person has enough agency to follow that plan, it might be worthwhile. For a depressed person that doesn’t have the agency, I think it will be a problematic strategy.
